The Lonach Highland Gathering and Games
A showcase of traditional Scottish sports and events including pipe bands, tug-o-war and highland dancing! There are many Highland Gatherings which take place in Summer across Scotland, but I think the one at Lonach is a particularly good one. The Lonach Highland and Friendly Society organise this event and they were founded in 1823 by Sir Charles Forbes, 1st Baronet of Newe and Edinglassie (1773-1849). Membership is drawn from the inhabitants of Strathdon, who continue to fulfill the society’s original mission of preserving Highland dress and “supporting loyal, peaceful, and manly conduct; and the promotion of social and benevolent feelings among the inhabitants of the district.” You can expect a warm welcome and a cracking family-friendly day out - with traditional heavy athletic events like tug-o-war and the caber toss, as well as highland dance competitions, track and field events and piping. The games are a spectacle like no other. And it all takes place against a scenic Scottish backdrop. Come here to experience true Scottish culture and tradition in its most authentic form.
